Turquoise has importance to many people
and tribes worldwide. The Apache believed that turquoise helped warriors
and hunters to aim accurately. The Pima consider it to bring good
fortune and strength and that it helped overcome illness and Zuni
believed that it protected them from demons. Pueblo Indians thought that
its color was stolen from the sky, while Navajos consider it as good
fortune to wear and believe it could appease the Wind Spirit. In Hopi
legend the lizard who travels between the above and the below, excretes
turquoise and that the stone can hold back floods, while in Asia it was
considered protection against the evil eye. Tibetans carved turquoise
into ritual objects as well as wearing it in traditional jewelry.
Ancient manuscripts from Persia, India, Afghanistan, and Arabia report
that the health of a person wearing turquoise can be assessed by
variations in the color of the stone. Turquoise was also thought to
promote prosperity. In Europe even today, turquoise rings are given as
forget-me-not gifts. From this we can see because of it's attractive
beauty, turquoise has had a great importance and increasing popularity. |
