Located just north of Dallas, the town of Plano was founded by two gentlemen in the mid 1800’s. Mister Ben Dare and Don Datt decided that this would be a great place to build a church, farm, and raise their families. This giant metropolis that was once just a small little town on a dusty cattle trail still has it’s charming main street and the original church. The church, with its beautiful steeple and adjacent fishing pond, could easily be on any picture postcard. My children and I have experienced great joy by catching crawfish in this pond many an afternoon after church on Sundays.

In the 1970’s the city fathers and city mothers cancelled their regular Bar-B-Que to hold a meeting to determine Plano’s future. The population at this time was less than three thousand friendly folks, but after the meeting all this was about to change. In order to bring more business and revenue into the area the city developed a new slogan. Plano came to be known as "The City of Meetings", and this slogan has revolutionized this area of Texas.

All types of businesses flocked to Plano so they could be able to hold their meetings, solve problems, and plan their future. One of the major ideas that came out of these meetings was that there should be more meetings. Plano was the first city to inaugurate the idea of a "Power Lunch", followed closely by the "Power Breakfast", and the "Power Dinner". At one of these "Power Breakfast" meetings they came up with the idea of the "Power Coffee Break". Most visitors to Plano will discover that there are a lot of hockey fans in town.

Voice Mail, one of the greatest time savers ever developed came out of one of these meetings. Seemed like they figured out that they could hold meetings whenever they wanted and their customers would never get a busy signal. All they had to do was to assign different instructions to each number on the telephone dial pad. Fortunately, the Texas school system is one of the best in the nation, and nearly all their customers had the ability to count to ten.

There is a proper etiquette to be used when leaving a message on a voice mail system. Keep your voice pleasant, and never ever shout, holler, or cuss. Speak in distinct, easy to understand words and state your desire very plainly. Please remember that the person you are leaving the message for has probably just returned from a meeting.

Located to the west of the interstate, and on the other side of the mall is a huge golden-domed building called "The Meeting Place". There are lots of folks that mistakenly think that this is a singles bar. Nope, this is where companies and organizations come from all over Texas to hold meetings. There are podiums, stages, executive tables, red carpets, captain’s chairs, genuine leather executive chairs, recliners, school bells, waiters, waitresses, the finest in catering, including gourmet coffees, and French pastries.

The Meeting Place is open from 6A.M. until 12 midnight daily, and only closes on Sundays, major holidays, bank holidays, city holidays, state holidays, national holidays, 3-day holidays, in observance of the sinking of the Spanish Armada, and Remember the Alamo Day. If you’d like to call ahead to schedule a meeting just remember that everyone could be in a meeting planning the next meeting, or at the ball game. It may be a good idea to just leave them a message on their voice mail system and let them know that you’d like to make an appointment to hold a meeting. They will call you back, just as soon as the meeting is adjourned, or the ball game is over.
